Paris Massacre: 60th Anniversary
October 17 2021
This weekend we mark the 60th anniversary of the October 1961 massacre of more than 200 peaceful Algerian protestors on the streets of Paris.
Despite a media block on these events at the time and a lack of international condemnation, the silence that greeted this outrage is now long over and the overwhelming evidence documenting the events is widely accepted.
What remains is to consider how the Algerian, French and international communities now respond to the tragedy. Algerians continue to come to terms with these events and the survivors and bereaved have campaigned for justice for six long decades.
As the French government moves closer to an official apology some sense of justice may final be approaching. This process will continue to take many years but will never be over until the families of victims are fully acknowledged and compensated for their unspeakable loss. An official apology will never be enough.
The international community now has to respond in kind by raising awareness of these horrific events. Activists, academics, artists and filmmakers have all made responses of integrity and solidarity and my own novel is a small and respectful contribution to the memory of the Algerians who were murdered and brutalised in the events on and around those of October 17 1961.
On this day we remember the courage and the suffering of our brothers and sisters in the Algerian community of Paris, and salute their continued campaign for justice.
